To stand a chance to defeat the enormous Trade Federation army of droids, the Republic needed a huge army or their own, and luckily Obi-Wan Kenobi discovered a secret army of clones being created for the Republic in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
Although most clones don't really have a name, many of them give each other nicknames to feel more like individuals, like clone CC-2224 who is called "Cody" by his friends.
